I totally understand what you are saying. I think the approach you took was perfect. You can’t push things on them. They have to find their own path and discover things themselves. You can share your hobbies with them and maybe some will stick. If not, you are at least spending time together and can share some great memories. My father didn’t fly-fish or hunt and I took up both. But he did take me camping,
hiking, and spin fishing. Sometimes it skips a generation or two. He instilled that love of the outdoors and the desire to explore nature.
My son and I go camping and spend time together outdoors he just didn’t get the fishing bug like us. Maybe someday that will change if not he is going to be inheriting alot of stuff he has no use for.
@dpnoll David, That is an amazing brook trout !!! I have never seen one with the caudal fin (tail) so red. The blue rings around the red spots really stand out. Excellent catch. You ought to send that to a fishing magazine for publication. What fly did you catch him on?
My son and I snuck out to the pond this past weekend to get a little spring fishing in. Not pictured is the 12" Chain pickerel that grabbed my bead head fly and became my first fish of 2024.
I had a really prolific pre-spawn season on my local warm water. The residents are all on their beds now. Gotta get back up into the mountains for trout water
The only two fish I caught Friday from my favorite stream. It was very high with runoff and access was difficult to my usual spots. The smaller fish is more representative of the average fish size here. The larger fish is an absolute hog for this area and I believe this is the same trout i’ve lost twice before. Im lucky to get one or two a year like this from this body of water.
I had an interesting catch the other day. A 19 inch bull trout which took an elk hair caddis. Was my first time catching one on a dry fly. It was a really intense hatch and it was also the first time I have noticed fish being particularly selective about fly pattern. Fish were rising everywhere but would refuse all my flies except for 2 patterns!
Today was the first time Pam ever tried fly fishing. After 5-10 minutes of practice I felt she was ready to try fishing. When the first fish hit her fly I said “set” and she turned to me and said “What”? So I explained what it meant. The next time she landed this beauty. I’m not sure who was more excited, Pam or I.
New member thought I’d post a couple pics from today and say thanks to the knowledge from the board. Nissin Zerosum Honryu 395 with a 5m 2.5 / 2.0 camo Sunline level line and 4.5x Trouthunter. The Walt’s Worm and olive perdigon were doing a fair bit of damage today.
Been at the Tenkara game roughly four weeks now and enjoying it greatly. Enjoy the pics and the weekend.
