In this week’s video I catch my biggest fish yet. It may not be gigantic in the grand scheme of trout sizing, but I fish small streams almost exclusively, so this thing was a monster for me.
Another very nice video. I love the size of the streams you are fishing. Perfect tenkara water.
I was wearing headphones and could hear the the line singing from being stretched tight and the water acting like a violin bow. An indicator of a big fish that I’ve only noticed with a Tenkara rod (and level line). Congratulations!
I haven’t posted the last few videos here, but there have been a couple of good ones, including this one that inexplicably has 25,000+ views
But below is the most recent video from this past Saturday. I fished a creek with an obscene number of fish in it. This is actually the tiny little tailwater of a reservoir, and the reservoir was stocked with tens of thousands of fish in the summer. My working theory is that all of these fish got flushed out from the reservoir. Poor things.
Not my video, but this one was just posted by Utah Tenkara this week. Backcountry fishing for native cutthroats.
The different styles of videos are interesting. I do like the style with the person talking and there is more of a storyline to it. I think it’s more engaging, but it’s also sure fun to watch lots of nice fish being caught.
An internet search turns up several hits for trout caught in Loganburn and Coal Pit reservoirs, which I think are fairly close to each other. I hook substantial sized fish so infrequently, in the excitement I forget what I am supposed to do to land a big fish. otoh, I rarely have the option of chasing them very far along the bank, and end up losing them.
I am not sure why but I am yet to hook a fish under 2 lbs Tenkara fishing, it is not like I don’t want to catch small fish. There was no choice but to lead the fish along the bank as it was impossible to land any closer due to the height of the bank.
Howie, was this video from last year or this year? If you’re like me, I’m still writing 2019 on everything.
Is the bank along the lake that steep? Or is it just a distortion off the camera lens?
Jeff. @dwalker posted both of those videos in a thread here.
Sorry! I was emailing with Dr. Ishigaki the other day and he included the link. It was new to me and I missed the original post here! Thank you
Whoops it was this year, silly me. and yes the bank was a straight drop to the water.
No worries, Jeff! I just thought I’d let you know he posted both videos. That’s great that you have email communication with Ishigaki-sensei!
@howienz1 I figured that’s what it was. I’ve been writing 2019 at work for the past two weeks.
Jeff, did Dr. Ishigaki elaborate on the production of the Master Tenkara series?
Three years ago Fishing Vision uploaded to Vimeo a trailer - Tenkara Waza. That best I can tell would be in Japanese language - テンカラ技 , tenkara skills (technique). That states episode 1 coming soon. But I never saw anything more about it.
However, Fishing Vision now seems to block access to there website videos playing in the USA. Though they used to be accessible. Anyway, I was thinking perhaps this new Master Tenkara series is what the Tenkara Waza project turned into or maybe it is some new new project.
Tenkara Waza Trailer - description - "Tenkara is an ancient method of fly fishing devised by the mountain dwelling hunters of Japan, known as “Matagi’ or “Shokuryoushi.”…In this series, Dr. Hisao Ishigaki - a professor and Tenkara enthusiast of 35 years- teaches viewers the skills and techniques involved in Tenkara while touching on the history of how this method came to be.”

At about the same time Fishing Vision also uploaded to vimeo - Tenkara “Do” (dou) [ テンカラ道, tenkara way] About Yūzō Sebata . ( 瀬畑雄三 ) I had hoped that would also be developed, expanded, into a longer video. But I also never saw anything more about it.
“Deep within the mountains of Japan lives a man named Yuzo Sebata, a Tekara master. Tenkara “Do” takes you into the life of this man with an immeasurable love for nature.”
Here’s this week’s video. I’m amazed at how big the fish got in this tiny creek.
“Oooo…a dead sheep”
Was not expecting that!
Great video. Love the varied places you fish and your adventures. Most over-looked stream! I don’t think I ever seen another video of someone fishing a stream 12 inches across in parts.
Here’s my latest video:
I only fished here once before winter set in, so I can’t wait to get back there. This was an amazing creek to fish!
