I don’t know I have been using tippet rings tied with Davy Knots and have had know problems and they are much easier to tie line to line than a Uni knot
I enjoy tippet rings, they have no adverse effect on the line. I’ve had a lot of people cast my lines that didn’t know I used them (I use small ones) and then surprise them with, “…yup, tippet ring on that line.”
I use Davy knots as well. Tippet ring is added complication to the tackle- it’s more knots, more weight, more places that something could go wrong. These are the reasons I do not use them anymore.
Same here.
That’s what you should do.
Do what you want.
It’s best.
I’ve never heard about Tenkara anglers using tipet rings in Japan though I guess there might be someone using them.
I don’t use them but I think it’s a good idea.
I use the tiny Stonfo tippet rings most of the time. I don’t notice any difference in casting when I switch to one of my lines that doesn’t have a tippet ring.
I also don’t notice breakage at the tippet ring as often as I would expect. I’m generally using 5x tippet and if it breaks it often does so either halfway down the tippet or (most often) very close to the fly itself. YMMV, etc.
I have noticed fish actually striking at the tippet ring a couple of times when I had to lay line on the water due to wind or current, or when I made a really bad cast. That’s both funny and frustrating. Like, “Why couldn’t you just take my fly instead?”
That’s true
Often it happens when fish is focusing on objects moving on the water surface
I’ve never had that happen before.
I agree with @anon86692127 and @tvdavisid, I like using them and see many benefits to using them. I just bought some new ones, the smallest I’ve purchased; they’re 2mm. The ones I used previously were 3mm and 3.5mm. These will have even less effect (and I didn’t really notice with the bigger ones) and look forward to using them.
Same here: 2 mm. These are the ones I use: Stonfo Joint Rings - Fly Tying Vise Tools
These are the ones I got:
I have been using the 2mm stonfo ones as well.
Tippet rings make it easier in winter with cold hands.
Regarding fish hitting the tippet rings. I have had salmon strike my micro swivel on a furled leader. Not just once but three different drifts. The second brought a smile and the third brought some laughter. I am sure the critters in the forest filled in the lunatic checkbox next to my name that mornimg…dont those salmon know how much time i spent tying those flies???
I like tenkara as it is practiced in Japan. But I don’t live there. I live here in the United States of America and practice it as an American.
If I lived in Japan, I still would not be authentic. I would not use the same historical equipment and sell fish, from my understanding, that is a tenkara angler.
Tenkara in Japan now is influenced by the west and outside of Japan, tenkara is influenced by Japan.
It is my obligation as a tenkara fisher to practice it as I please. I study tenkara from Japanese tenkara fishermen but I do it my way.
In order for me to become proficient at my style of tenkara, it is necessary for me to do it my way.
I suggest anyone to become good at tenkara to practice it and develop your style and have fun with it. Tippet rings have nothing to do with my tenkara. It’s a preference, not an absolute.
My absolutes for my tenkara are mountain streams, rod, line and fly, everything else is arguable except, I will not argue it.
I am not an authentic tenkara angler from Japan.
For people looking to learn tenkara as it was practiced in Japan, you will have to define your level of research. There are very few books on historical tenkara anglers there and none written in English.
I used tippet rings in many mountain streams in Japan, with many experts watching. I caught Iwana just like they did. I used Japanese equipment, I was doing the same thing they did. No one told me I was not a tenkara fisherman because of a tiny ring.
It’s interesting how people focus on tenkara. I just try to catch fish and enjoy the beautiful Japanese people and their ways of tenkara.
Tippet rings are a method of keeping things orderly in my line system. It’s a rigging technique. It’s my choice for my tenkara.
Enjoy tenkara your way.
Your choice is best, not my choice for you. I do not teach new anglers about tippet rings. I show them how to knot the tippet on directly, later I show them books to purchase for further study.
I have not had that happen but I believe you. If that happened, I would probably change fly or kebari.
I have had fish strike at the red tube covering the braided end of a loop attached to a fly line when I was fly fishing.
That’s when I changed to fishing dry fly from nymphing. And sometimes it would change my catch rate. Sometimes I would catch less fish.
I like sharing stories, thank you for your interesting observation.
Tenkara in Japan now is influenced by the west and outside of Japan, tenkara is influenced by Japan.
I first met fly when I was 3 years old (1962)
It is 57 years from now and the place is Azumino in Nagano
Because why I remember was very beautiful and impressive
I went to a kebari fishing with an old man in my neighborhood
A Japanese fishing magazine is not introducing FF fishing method and tenkara fishing
At that time it was called kebari fishing
After that it became popular in western Japan as a tenkara fishing (1960 's)
tenkara fishing is a new type of kebari fishing in Japan as well
Even now it is kebari fishing and mountain fishing in eastern Japan
There are various methods according to the area
I think that all are superior, but there is not the best fishing
here is no fishing of only (the best)
I think that way of thinking is very inconvenient
I am telling you what I’ve been experiencing myself but I do not think that is the best fishing
I want to catch a beautiful fish with a beautiful kebari
I would like to see how everyone enjoys
If you are interested in kebari fishing you are enjoying in eastern Japan please visit my website
If you are interested in fishing of older kebari please do not hesitate to ask
We have been taught very well by many Japanese people.
This is the story that I understand from many Japanese anglers.
Thank you very much for your generous expertise. I am enjoying learning from you.
I am very impressed with your knowledge and experience
and I feel a lot of respect
It is also my re-discovery of against tenkara Fishing
I would like very grateful
Fish reacts not only to the ring but also to the knot
People also react to the ring.
It’s ok.
We enjoy fishing, that is more important than our choices on how to do it.
I hope you have a nice day.
