Bowhunting Trad. Bowhunting

Any other hobbies besides tenkara? Yes, I practise traditional bow hunting in New Caledonia. I hunt rusa deer, wild boar, turkey, pukeko, goat… wherever possible on my island. Since 2009, I have been hunting with a Howard Hill Wesley Special

longbow, using wooden arrows and heavy (300 g) TuffHead hunting tips. I hope to find many bow hunters here with whom I can discuss bows, hunting, hunting tips, and more.

I wish I could learn how to hunt and bow hunt.

For me it is a factor of schedule, and that I am self taught in all my outdoor activities. I do not have any outdoorsmen in my family, nor friends that hunt.

I do flyfish the saltwater and also surfcast with spinning gear. Often the more gnarly the conditions, the better it is for fishing.

Definitely keep us posted on your hunting adventures.

Will do !

Not a bow hunter myself, but I’ve always wanted to. Some time ago I started reading The Bowyer’s Bible and after only a few chapters I put it down and just started making a bow. That first bow broke in my hands, but it helped me wrap my head around what the authors were talking about. I made a few more bows as I worked my way through the rest of the book.

I’ve yet to make a good bow, probably due to working with hardware store wood, but a few got close to being hunting worthy. Similar to @Gressak, I’ve don’t have anyone to get me started on hunting, but it’s become something of a bucket list item for me. I’ve always wanted to go grouse hunting with a bow I made myself, and use what I hunt (e.g. feathers, sinew) to build better equipment.

Tracked down a picture of one of the longbows I made. This one is crazy thin, with a mere 15 (?) pound draw weight. It was a fun experiment in finding and following growth rings, but not a very practical bow.

Thank you for sharing your photo. Nice longbow, I love it! How many bows have you made? Have you ever tried bow hunting? From stream to hill, it’s just a short hop .
