Keiryu birds nest

While fishing last weekend my keiryu line bird’s-nested. I’ve had this happen the same way a few times now. What happens is I’ll get a minor tangle on the line, and as I collapse sections to bring the snag down to me, the rod tip wobbles so much that the line starts bouncing around and the tangle gets exponentially worse. By the time the pole’s collapsed the line looks like this.

Rest in peace 5m keiryu line.

Anyone else have this problem? It always happens this same way. Any workarounds aside from laying the pole down and walking to tangle?

Also, the 5m keiryu rod was killing it on a mountain stream last weekend. Tight line nymphing in pocket water was too fun.

I’ve found that happens to me proportionally to how complex my line setup is. Like multiple flies, indicator, tag lines or droppers, etc. The tangles have mostly caused me to fish with one fly only, which feels more “tenkara” in it’s simplicity anyway.

Yeah, the complexity of the keiryu line is definitely playing a role here. The mix of knots and indicator yarn make it really easy to start a tangle.

What rod were you using and what line do you like for keiryu? I’m gonna fish keiryu style in some high alpine lakes this weekend. Cheers!

Because of the dense brush, I was using a shorter Keiryu rod: The Kaname III FP 53 by Suntech. Nice rod, zero complaints about the Kaname III lineup.

This is my line recipe:
2 ft of 5x fluorocarbon tippet.
5 ft of 3x fluorocarbon tippet.
n ft of 3.5 weight level line.

n = ( RodLength / √2 ) - 7

Fly and split shot on section 1. Indicator yarn on section 2.

Keiryu is a ton of fun on alpine lakes, good luck!

Sounds like the dreaded grapling hook effect. Once that weight starts in orbit, it is very good at securing itself and can create quite a mess…hahaha.

I dont like fishing weight for that reason.

Thoughts. Dig up my spiderwire threads and try a line made of it. Mono and flouro tends to have memory… it wants to coil and make a mess…in its heart of hearts.

Also curious if you have considered skipping the 5’ of 3x, extending your levelline by 5 feet.

Reduce the knots and stiffen the delivery segment.

If you fish a beaded futsu you may be able to skip the lead.

Interesting thoughts, thanks for the recommendations. I’ll have to experiment a bit. I was thinking about skipping the 3X, maybe just needed a bit of encouragement. Spider wire might have a place where too
