Fished a new blue line. Wild brookie water just teeming with life! Got some real beauties this week.
Nice Rainbows…Karl.
Hello! I caught a beautiful bass over the weekend. Not sure if it’s my smallest ever but it’s close! (Need a photo tank I know)
Little wild native brook trout caught in the White Mountains during the Tenkara Camp Out last weekend.
A few small cutties from yesterdays after work outing. Checked this spot out before run-off and got skunked. Fast forward to yesterday and it ended up being one of my best fishing days in the last 2 years. It’s been interesting learning differences in trout holding patterns throughout the seasons.
Did some fishing in a few of the rivers in the Tilamook area while visiting my dad. Lots of perfect Tenkara water and the cutthroat are plentiful and can’t resist a reverse hackle fly. If I had to pick a favorite fish it would be the coastal cutthroat for sure!
I was lucky to land this one. Tied on an unknown fly, finding the eye, in the dark with remaining leader after losing a Clyde style Hen Blackie in a snag. Two casts later…landed at 2305 on Summer Solstice, River Tummel Perthshire where the trout come out to play after dark. The fly turned out to be a Green Peter Caddis imitation. There was a big swarm of Brown Sedge on the water.
Wow, what a beautiful brown trout. Congratulations. The red spots running down the lateral line looks awesome.
New fish species to me yesterday, the Dolly Varden. More closely related to the Artic Char than the Bull Trout they live in isolated populations in high gradient streams. Really beautiful fish that live in even more beautiful spots. Really strong fighters as well!
Beautiful fish. I have a soft spot for dolly varden having grown up in Alaska where they are plentiful. Been a long time since ive seen one.
Ryan,
I’ve caught cutthroat before but they never were this beautiful. The spots, par marks, and the soft peach-pink belly color is amazing. Great catch and great picture.
The local trout streams are open here in BC and I got to do a quick over night last week. Endless 12-16” rainbows eating whatever you threw at them. Was a great time!
Not enough pictures of panfish in here. Had to break in the Mizuchi and catch some fish on it, nothing better than panfish for that! My son even grabbed it from me and caught a huge 9" bluegill on it!
Hi all, I’m not seeing an introduction thread but figure this is a good place to start.
I’m Andy – I’ve only been fishing tenkara for a couple of months now and had no previous fishing experience. I moved from LA to the Bishop area in the Eastern Sierra in March, and am excited about all the world class fishing here. Combining fishing with my other outdoor interests (mountain running, ultralight hiking, bouldering, biking) has been tons of fun so far, and I’m hoping to do some of the Running Rivers fly fishing/running challenges this year.
Since I moved up here in the spring right after the heaviest winter on record, I’ve been exclusively nymphing under an indicator, almost always with one or two splitshot until this past Saturday. I had tried dries a couple of times, but no luck.
I got a tip on a very narrow meadow creek with big fish and lots of hoppers from David at Sierra Trout Magnet and went to check it out. Lost my first hopper to a big aggressive fish, then lost my last one to a weird snag that launched into the meadow void. Switched over to a size 8 kebari, the only other biggish flies I had, and hooked into these big browns, about 11" and a behemoth 18", and another smaller one not pictured. Couldn’t believe it – my previous biggest fish was an 11" brown my first day fishing!
Not sure if I’ll catch a bigger fish anytime soon. I’m hooked/obsessed etc – very satisfying to catch something on a kebari after nymphing for so long. Thank you all for your contributions, knowledge and mutual obsession, learning a lot here.
Welcome to the party! Thanks for sharing! Also can I stay at your place for a few days there’s no rivers in San Diego.

A nice Dolly Varden from the other day and the plunge pool where it was living. Finding these fish in these high gradient streams is quickly becoming my favourite activity.
