The reason the longer rod more leverage myth is propagated is because it is great for the rod makers and seller’s profits. If they can convince anglers that they need longer rods and they offer a unique advantages, then they will sell many more rods. Longer rods require more graphite to construct, and those rods sell at the highest prices…Karl.

Longer fishing rods can be better for fighting fish in some situations, but shorter rods may be better in others:
- Longer rods
Longer rods can have a parabolic action that cushions the leader from sudden fish surges, especially when the fish are drawn into shallow water. If they also have longer handles, it can allow anglers to apply more pressure to the fish and shorten the landing time. However, longer rods can give the fish more leverage, and if the rod is very long with a short handle, the fish can exert more force on the angler. Longer rods can also be harder to control and aim accurately with. Longer rods can also generally cast farther.
- Shorter rods
Shorter rods are more nimble and precise in small areas, and they have less bend than longer rods in close-up battles. This can make them better for fish that tend to put up a fight, and they can be a good choice when fishing around tight cover.
Orvis has a video -setting the hook and fighting fish- that shows the spring scale readings using tip up and side pressure techniques.
There is another Orvis video showing how big a fish can be landed on a 5 Wt. fly rod and a #14 fly using side pressure, where the whole rod and reel is under water up to the angler’s elbow under a log jam…Karl.

I have a Tenkara USA Rhodo and I’m considering a Dragontail Mutant. I’ve recently started offering therapeutic fly fishing in Wisconsin, and we have some really small streams with a lot of trees. The shorter lengths help with casting and I’m hoping will be flexible switching to child clients.
